Camping Park Umag stretches along the coast of the Adriatic Sea, in northern Croatia. What’s hot: the distance between the two extreme points is about five kilometers. Located in the northern Istrian peninsula, this four-star campground is full of activities and events. The beach is among the most beautiful in the country; especially the bay at the far end is popular and beautiful. The campground, while large, is narrow. You will always be near the beach and probably even have a view of the water. This true family campground is full of greenery, and the closer you are to the water, the sunnier it gets. Stroll the promenade, eat at one of the restaurants located on and just outside the campground, and immerse yourself in the many water sports options offered at this campground. The campground has its own jetty.
So the campground is located in the north of the Istrian peninsula, not too far from the Slovenian border. There is plenty to do and see in the area. Let’s start with the location itself: the campsite is located near the village of Umag. This one is quite worthwhile, although towns like Novigrad and Porec are just a bit more interesting and lively. Here there are numerous nice restaurants and bars, and in the evening there is plenty of street theater. Also fun to visit: the ancient lighthouse of Savudrija, on the most northwestern tip of Istria. Closer by is the Katoro Peninsula, where an ancient Roman villa was recently discovered quite intact. With thermal baths, amazing mosaics and fresco murals. If you go snorkeling or diving here, you will see remnants of this villa even in the water. Still prefer something more entertaining with the kids? Nearby is the water park Istralandia, full of spectacular slides, a water playground and more.
Close to the sea with plenty of sun, or do you prefer under shady trees? The campground is huge, with some 3,000 sites. All of these sites have plenty of space, so you can pitch your tent right on the beach, or near the pool, or just outside all the crowds. Distances are long here, so a bicycle or a scooter is not a luxury. The campground is divided into zones, so the restaurants or the stores or, certainly not unimportant, the sanitary facilities again need not be too far away. At least you have choices at Camping Park Umag, that much is clear.
The same goes for accommodations. As the cliché goes, there is something for everyone, and that certainly holds true for this campground. This is a real family campground, so of course the cottages have multiple bedrooms. They are scattered throughout the campground, so you can rent a cottage right by the water, or prefer inland among the trees. There are multiple providers, so the choice is also certainly wide.
At Camping Park Umag, you won’t be short of water anytime soon. The campground is fully committed to water fun and features an aqua park as large as 1,700 square meters. Still, in high season it wants to get very crowded here, but then you always have the sea. The water park has several pools, including an activity pool, a wading pool with play equipment and a children’s pool with play equipment and water slides. The smallest children can play captain in the pirate pool, larger children walk across the water in a large plastic ball. As mentioned, the water park Istralandia is just 9 kilometers away. There are several pools with great water slides and a water playground. And as mentioned, you also have the sea. This slopes slowly, making it safe for children. Water shoes are highly recommended, though, as there are sharp pebbles on the bottom.
A distance from a to b of five kilometers: it is a good thing that Camping Park Umag offers several restaurants, so the nearest one is not that far away either. There is, of course, diversity in those restaurants, from pizza to typical Istrian specialties such as cevapcici and bakalar. Charlies Bar is located right by the sea and offers music and cocktails. Bella Nova comes highly recommended. There are also several restaurants and bars along the promenade. In Novigrad you will also find very fine restaurants, for when you want to get out and eat outside the campsite.
This campground has a good animation team, which organizes all kinds of things in the afternoons and evenings, such as baking cookies or karaoke and everything in between. For example, various shows are organized and the campground makes sure they stop in time: nothing more annoying than being kept awake by noise, right? In the afternoons, there are many sports activities, mainly taking place around the water. Or perhaps a morning of yoga or fitness?
There are several playgrounds around the pool, so kids can have fun in the water but also outside. Adults-and, of course, children-can get their sports hearts racing on the tennis and volleyball courts. Still, this campground is primarily a paradise for water sports enthusiasts, such as water skiing and windsurfing. Do you dare? What’s also fun: the edutainment ecopark. This is a Botanical Garden, full of typical Croatian plants. Nice to take a walk through and take in the scents of the area. At the plants you will find more information about the particular plant.
In the campground you will find several stores, including a supermarket with bakery, fruit and ice cream. Want to have an evening barbecue: here you will find everything you need for it. There is also a market full of traditional goods, a coffee bar and even a family doctor’s office. Seven kilometers away is a large supermarket, as well as a shopping center, so you won’t be short of anything at all.
The surroundings of this campground naturally invite you to explore. But on the other side of the sea, not so far away at all, lies the wonderful miracle of Venice. Take the hovercraft and take a gondola ride along the canals of this Italian fairytale city. A surely perfect day out!
