Camping Domaine de la Dragonnière

Camping Domaine de la Dragonnière - lagoon - swimming pool

Camping Domaine de la Dragonnière is a beautiful 5-star Sandaya campsite in the Occitania region of southern France. In this region you will find beaches, wine regions and a wonderful climate. At Camping Domaine de la Dragonnière you can also have a great time because thanks to the amazing lagoon, you can imagine yourself on a desert island. There are also beautiful swimming pools and slides for the real daredevils. It is a large campground, but the swimming park and restaurants are fairly central.

There is also lots to do and experience for the children at Camping Domaine de la Dragonnière. The entertainment program organizes all kinds of fun activities for all audiences, including teens. There is a Dutch-speaking member of the animation team, but it is not for every age group. In addition, there are many restaurants to choose from where you can eat, as well as several take-out options. The evening shows are of a very high standard and provide great entertainment in the evenings. Please note that this is a French campground so the evening shows are only in French.

It looks like the campground is made up of two parts, Dragonnière and Espagnac (see also Map). It has not become clear to us exactly how this is, but there is a difference in the two parts. In fact, the accommodations in the Dragonnière area are significantly newer and therefore look nicer. The camping areas are found in this section, as well as the general swimming park, lagoon, restaurants and stage. In Espagnac is the Espace l’Olympe, or sports section. There is a skate park, a cross fit area, a running track and a semi-Olympic swimming pool. There are also padel courts, bocce courts and much more. The rental properties in this section seem to be a bit older here.

If you prefer not to drive all the way to the south of France, then it is good to know that the Béziers-Cap ‘d Agde airport is nearby. Ryanair flies to this airport from Brussels Charleroi and Düsseldorf Weeze. A shuttle service is available from the campground.

Location and environment

Camping Domaine de la Dragonnière, as mentioned earlier, is located in southern France in the region of Hérault. This region is known for its wines, but also for its beaches. Within a 10-minute drive you will find the beaches of Vias Plage, Valras Plage and Portiragnes Plage. Vias Plage is home to France’s largest open amusement park, Europark Vias. Furthermore, it has a nice promenade, but do not expect a typical French village: this is a typical tourist place. The old center of Vias does still have the French charm. The lively village of Cap d’Agde is also nearby, known for its sandy beaches, marina, Aqualand water park and vibrant nightlife.

In addition, the campground is the ideal place to visit Béziers. In this old medieval village is the Saint Nazaire Cathedral, a beautiful Gothic cathedral with beautiful views of the surroundings. The city park in Béziers is also recommended for a nice walk, fun playgrounds and a waterfall. Thanks to the many restaurants and cafes, there are plenty of places to relax for a while.

The nine locks of Fonséranes are also a must-see. Ships are raised or lowered by a sluice ladder here which is interesting to watch. You can take a walk along the waterfront where you can see even more traditional buildings.
A UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Canal du Midi is a 250-km-long canal dating back to the 17th century. The canal runs between Toulouse and the Mediterranean (Sète) and there are many lovely villages to discover. Both on foot and by bicycle and boat.

Furthermore, the cities of Carcassone and Montpellier are recommended as well as Sète, where a free cab boat will drop you off in the center.

Pitches

Even if you go to Camping Domaine de la Dragonnière with your own camping equipment, you will enjoy the luxury that this campsite offers. Because all pitches have private bathroom facilities as standard. In addition, dogs are allowed. There are two types of pitches, we describe them below:

Prestige: this pitch is at least 100m2 and is in a shaded area. This luxury camping spot is equipped with water connection and drainage and 10A of electricity. You also have a private, heated, sanitary block equipped with a shower, toilet and a sink. Outside is a sink for your dishes. There is also garden furniture at your disposal, a table fridge, anitmug lamp and even a gas barbecue. Wifi is also included. That’s super-deluxe camping!

Premium: the Premium camping spot is almost the same as the Prestige camping spot, only it does not include a gas barbecue and anitmug lamp. But so a heated sanitary block with shower/toilet/sink, a dishwashing area, water connection and drainage, 10A electricity and the spot is at least 100m2. There are Premium pitches suitable for disabled people, these are pitches 33, 46, 47 and 61.
The sanitary building at the Premium camping spot is a small building that contains two bathrooms and outdoor sinks. You share a small building with the neighbors, but of course you have your own bathroom (equipped with key) and dishwashing area. However, you don’t have the same amount of privacy in every spot between the two sinks & pitches, so sometimes you do get a lot of notice from your neighbors. We found that a little bit disturbing in our spot.

You book both pitches through Allcamps / LuxCamp / Suncamp.

One car is allowed per camping spot, which you park in your spot. If you are with more cars, you should park them in general parking lot for a fee.

Because all pitches have their own private sanitary facilities, there is no general sanitary building at Camping Domaine de la Dragonnière. However, there is a baby changing area including baby bathtubs.

If you want to wash during your vacation at Camping Domaine de la Dragonnière, you can do so in the laundry room. You will find washing machines and clothes dryers. The cost of a wash is 5 or 6 euros and laundry detergent is available for 1 euro. The clothes dryer cost 3 euros. You can pay with change there. An ironing board and iron can also be borrowed.

Accommodations

There is a very wide range of rental accommodations at Camping Domaine de la Dragonnière. There are several cottages and chalets for rent that can accommodate from 2 to 10 people. In addition, they are available in super deluxe versions as well as in a basic version. So there is a suitable accommodation for every wallet. The most luxurious version is the Premium. If you book this variant, it includes bedding, towels, final cleaning, WiFi and a baby kit as standard! Possibly the Premium is just a little bit more expensive, but so you get a lot more with it and therefore it doesn’t make much difference. You book all accommodations through Allcamps / LuxCamp / Suncamp.

Cottage Taos*: there are several variations of the luxurious Cottage Taos, all are Premium mobile homes* that include a dishwasher. The super-luxury Cottage Taos with Suite Premium sleeps 7, has 3 bedrooms and 3 bathrooms. The master suite even has access to the spacious terrace. However, this cottage has “only” 2 bathrooms (the master bedroom has an ensuite bathroom). The (semi-covered) porch has a nice sitting area with sofas, a dining table and sunbeds. The other 6-person cottage Keywest is a lot smaller (40m2) but also has 3 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms. The terrace is also a bit smaller and equipped with a dining table, sun beds and a nice hammock. The smallest Keywest cottage is 33m2 and can accommodate 5 people. There are 2 bedrooms and 1 bathroom, but there is a hammock and two sunbeds on the wooden veranda.

It is a 1-room chalet of 22m2 with bathroom. A sitting area, bed and work area is in 1 room, the bathroom is separate. In addition, you do have a lovely covered terrace at your disposal including 2 sunbeds. Please note that there is no kitchen available! But Sandaya also offers half-board.

Cottage Prestige: the Cottage Prestige is a mobile home offered in different models. The 4-star version is available in a 6-bedroom 34m2 version with 3 bedrooms and 1 bathroom. But also in a 5- and 4-bed variant: these are 30m2 in size and has 2 bedrooms & 1 bathroom. The advantage of the 4-star is that bedding, towels and a baby kit are included in the price.
The 3-star variant is available in a 6- and 4-bed variant and are almost the same, only this does not include bedding, towels and baby kit. Some 4-person cottages (three stars) are suitable for the disabled. They are numbers 139, 152 and 198. These cottages have a wheelchair-friendly terrace with access ramp, an adapted bathroom and a kitchen suitable for a wheelchair.

Chalet Prestige: the 4-star chalet for 5/6 people is 38m2 and has an extra floor. There are 2 bedrooms upstairs, the bathroom is on the first floor. The fine covered terrace has a garden set and there are 2 sunbeds. This chalet is directly adjacent to another chalet. The 2/3 person 4-star version has a master bedroom on the loft and a sofa bed in the living room. There is 1 bathroom and a nice (half) covered terrace. Bedding, towels and a baby kit are included with the 4-star chalets.
The 3-star chalets come in the following varieties: 10- and 5-bed. The 10-person version is 60m2, has 4 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms and a separate toilet. The chalet is built in an 8-corner and centers around the kitchen. The spacious terrace is semi-covered. The 5-person variant is half the size (30m2), has 2 bedrooms and 1 bathroom (and separate toilet). The 2-star chalets come in 5- and 2-person versions. They are 30 and 20m2 in size, respectively. These chalets are fairly standard but equipped with all the necessities either a bit more basic. Please note that the 3 and 2 star chalets do not have bedding, towels and baby kit included.

Cottage Prestige Declick: cottage Declick has 3 stars, is 25m2 in size, has 2 bedrooms (sleeps 4) and 1 bathroom. The kitchen and living room are one space: you also use the sofa for the dining table. The small terrace is covered, furthermore there are deck chairs in the garden.

Chalet Gémeau: chalet Gémeau also has 3 stars and can accommodate 4 people. On 30m2 you will find 2 bedrooms and 1 bathroom. Swimming

There are two different pool complexes at Camping Domaine de la Dragonnière. The main swimming park is located in the Dragonnière section, which is La Cubaine. Here you can enjoy two large swimming pools, a separate paddling pool and there is a pool with aquabikes for sports enthusiasts. The largest pool gets deep slowly and has a fun children’s playhouse with slide. The separate paddling pool also features fun play equipment. In addition, you can slide down one of six slides here. The four pentagliss slides are a treat as is the long slide with cool “lights. But if you are a real hero, then go down the kamikaze slide: a 23-meter slide that goes straight down! And you make such a big splash that you completely wet unsuspecting passersby on the road next to it. Around the pools is a sunbathing area of artificial grass where you can put your towel. In addition, there are recliners to sit in. So there are no sunbeds.

The real asset at Camping Domaine de la Dragonnière, however, is Le Lagon: a lovely lagoon with turquoise blue water and a real sandy beach. It feels like being on an exotic island, with nice warm water and beautiful views. The lagoon is not deep: it is divided into sections 0.70 m deep and gradually rises to a maximum of 1.35 m deep. The sandy beach is great for relaxing, reading a book or keeping an eye on your playing children. There are canopies available so you can lie in the shade. Then there is also a pirate ship on the beach where the children can play nicely. Fun entertainment activities are organized in the water. However, the entrance is a bit hidden. You think you can get there wherever the entrance to the pool is, but you can’t! You have to walk around the pool and then turn left at the bar La Bodega. This is not clearly indicated.

At L’Olympe you will find a semi-olympic pool for sports enthusiasts, but there is also a relaxation pool and two water playgrounds for the smallest guests. It is much quieter here than at the other pool. Here there are sunbeds to enjoy the sun. There is also an indoor pool, La Tropicale, but it was closed during our visit to the campground. By the way, it also looked abandoned, so we don’t know if it will be open again in another season.

There is also an extensive spa and wellness center at the campground. There is a sauna, hammam and balneotherapy room. You can also book wonderful treatments here such as facials, massages, manicures and much more. If you prefer to go to the beach, you will find it a 10-minute drive from the campsite where you can enjoy the turquoise blue waters of the Mediterranean Sea.

Restaurants

With no fewer than 4 restaurants and several take-out options, there is no reason to leave Camping de la Dragonnière. Next to the indoor playground and swimming pool you will find restaurant Le Garden Grill. So it’s ideal if you’re dining out with (small) children, because they can play in between. You just can’t make reservations there.
Right next to the pool is restaurant La Terrasse. As the name suggests, a restaurant with a large terrace, overlooking the pool, but there are plenty of seating areas inside as well. This is both a buffet restaurant and à la carte (depending on the season).
At Le Jack’s, aka Jack’s Burger Bar you order delicious burgers that you can eat right there on the patio or inside. Of course, you can also take your order to your own accommodation.
Restaurant Le Paillote is located next to the L’Olympe swimming pool. Here you will eat regional specialties.

If you don’t feel like cooking but would like to eat at your own (rental) accommodation, there is also plenty of choice at Camping Domaine de la Dragonnière. Grill restaurant La Rôtisserie offers a variety of takeout options. Think delicious pizza, roast chicken, paella and lasagna. You can also order drinks with it right away or make it a menu with food, drinks and chips.

Next door to La Rôtissie is Bambou. Bambou is a caterer offering Asian takeout including sushi. We did not eat there but it looked delicious. Then you also have La Barak à Moules, a food truck for mussels in front of Jack’s Burger. You order pans of delicious mussels and fries. There are several varieties of mussels available, and you take the pan, and the fries, back to your accommodation. Super cozy to eat out at home like this.

For a tasty sweet snack, stop by the Candy Shop. You order pancakes, waffles, Italian ice cream, slush puppies and various drinks. The ice cream parlor Glaces Artisanales, located next to swimming pool L’Olympe, has delicious ice creams, waffles, crepes and sundaes. You can also go here for slush puppies and milkshakes.

Besides all the delicious food, there are also nice bars where you can go for a nice drink. Surely the most fun is Le Havana, a café with Cuban influences. There is a lovely lounge terrace overlooking the pool and on the other side there is a terrace overlooking the beautiful lagoon. It is cheerfully and tropically decorated and is the best place for a cold beer or festive cocktail. In the evening, day-fresh oysters are also sold in the oyster boat! You can eat these, along with a glass of wine, on Le Havana’s terrace.

At bar La Bodega, they also offer tasty cocktails and other drinks. Here is also a small game hall with a pool table. This bar is adjacent to the large stage with terrace where the entertainment events take place. An outdoor bar is also open then.

Animation

There is something for all children between the ages of 5 and 17 at Camping Domaine de la Dragonnière. The program offers a morning and afternoon activity. There are three different children’s clubs with the Kids club focusing on children between the ages of 5 and 7. They do crafts together, have dance lessons and do sports activities. The Juniors club is meant for 8 to 12 year olds and they also do all kinds of (water) games, sports tournaments, scavenger hunts, etc. The Kids club space is a bit hidden, but you’ll find it past the entrance to La Bodega Bar. When we were there in summer 2023 there was also a Dutch girl member of the animation team. That’s kind of nice because otherwise almost only French is spoken.

Then you also have the Teens club for 11 to 13-year-olds, who organize morning and afternoon activities. The Ados club is especially for older teens, from 14 to 17 years old. They meet in the afternoons and evenings. For both clubs, they put together a fun program in consultation with the teens, so there is a lot of freedom. By the way, there is a special area for teenagers, which you will find next to Jack’s Burger.

If you have a baby or toddler they can go to the Babies Club. In the colorful room, books are read to them and they can play and do crafts. Note that this does come with a fee. We don’t know exactly how this works.

There is also plenty to do for adults, including various sports and dance classes such as salsa dancing. In the evening the children can go to the mini disco and then there are great, professional, evening shows. For example, a well-known hypnotist came to give a show, putting people from the audience under hypnosis on the big stage. Our children found it magical to see how this works and what all is happening. Despite the language (everything was in French), they, and we too, remained mesmerized by what all the people on stage were doing. And all by the snap of a finger. There is a large terrace in front of the huge stage (with big screen), but you have to go get your own drinks.

Sports & Recreation

Boredom is simply not possible at Camping Domaine de la Dragonnière because what’s not to do! There is so much to do and so many sports activities available that young and old can have fun here. The indoor playground with large playground equipment is a wonderful place for your children to play. There are seating areas in a grandstand shape where you as a parent can sit while your child is enjoying climbing and scrambling. This playground is located between the pool and restaurant Le Garden Grill (where you can have a nice meal while your kids can play!). The pool is fenced so you don’t have to worry about the kids getting into the pool.

Then there is also a bouncy castle, Koolaya Land. This bouncy castle, in the shape of a pirate boat, is free to enter and there are a number of chairs here as well for parents to take a seat. Near bar La Bodega is a small game hall with playground equipment, pool tables, a foosball table and air field hockey. There are also grappling machines. Guaranteed to be a place your kids will want to go.

If you head toward the parking lot, there is a very large rope climbing apparatus there. The bike rental is right next door. If you don’t have your own bike with you, rent one here because the area is perfect for exploring by bike. The advantage of this region is that it is not really hilly.

There are a couple of bungee trampolines, which you can use for a fee. By the way, we found this really quite pricey: 8 euros for 10 minutes. At the same place, you can rent electric cars, for children between the ages of 1 and 6, and wagon trailers.

A little further down the same street is another playground with playground equipment with a slide and some seesaws. The bocce courts are right next door. However, these are only two, so it shouldn’t be crowded!

This area also starts the L’Espace Olympe, or sports and games area. There is so much to choose from! We’ll just sum it up for you what’s there: a volleyball court, two padel courts, an archery range, as mentioned the bocce courts, a small skate park, outdoor fitness equipment, a 400-meter hard running course, a new basketball court, a cable car, a new mini soccer cage, a pumptrack for your scooter (although we didn’t find this very safe), a fairly large crossfit area with equipment & weights, a badminton court and table tennis tables. You will also find a public barbecue with picnic area and a rose garden in this area. As you can see, lots of choices!

Stores

There is also quite a bit of choice in terms of stores. The supermarket Spar has a wide selection with a fresh vegetable stall and a small butcher for tasty fresh (bbq) meat. You’ll find all kinds of drinks just like two wine taps and two sangria taps, where you can fill your own bottles. At the front of the store, they also sell fun toys for the beach.

At the bakery they have delicious pastries and baguettes for sale. However, we did not find the bread very good and preferred to go to the supermarket outside the campground for that. Next to the bakery is another small store selling local products from Occitania.

There is a very large bazaar/kiosk at the campground where you really have a lot of choices of swimwear, clothes, toys, beach towels, sunglasses and much more. You’ll find this store near the bocce courts and bungee trampolines.

If you still want a new haircut, you can even go to the barber at this campground! You’ll find the hairdresser next to the bike rental.

A 5-minute drive away is a large Intermarché supermarket, including a large drugstore section, and they also sell lots of other, practical, stuff you may have forgotten to bring from the Netherlands.
