A small-scale campsite, on the beautiful Lake Maggiore in the Ticino Valley, without too much fuss: this is how Camping Okay Lido could best be described in a nutshell. The campground is run by the Brun family, who can guarantee you plenty of peace and quiet above all. This true family campground is located directly on the lake and therefore has beautiful views of the snow-capped mountain peaks. Nearby, you can go on beautiful mountain hikes, as well as take a trip to fabulous Milan.
The campground is located on the quiet southern side of Lake Maggiore and from here you can go in any direction. Consider a day in Milan by train, with its Duomo, its fashion and its shopping streets. The train station is about four kilometers away and there is a bus service. Close to the campground is also one of the largest statues in the world. Sancarlone’s statue measures 35 meters, making it just slightly smaller than the Statue of Liberty in New York. You can climb this statue from the inside and from its nose, eyes and mouth you have a fantastic view of the lake and mountains. Good to know is that the stairs are very steep and thus not very accessible to everyone. By the lake are the towns of Arona and Stresa, which are more than worth a visit, and from Stresa, the spectacular toboggan run at Mottarone is a nice recommendation. The lake has several islands worth visiting by boat. Like Isola Bella, the Island of Flowers and the Borromeo Islands. Rocca di Angera is a large medieval fortress that also houses a puppet museum.
This small campground has several dozen pitches, for your tent, caravan or camper. These sites have electricity and water as well as shade, thanks to the wooded terrain. There are two modern washrooms on the grounds, with washing machines and ironing facilities. The showers work with tokens. Dogs are allowed at this campground. Okay Lido has a small pool and Lake Maggiore is within walking distance. Arriving spontaneously may be unwise due to the small scale; booking in advance is a lot safer.
Many accommodations offer you lake views, with beautiful sunsets and views of the snow-capped mountain peaks. These accommodations are quite spacious and all have terraces. At Camping Okay Lido there are plenty of choices, such as mobile homes, furnished tents, glamping, cottages, etcetera. Because the campground is so small, you are always close to everything: the lake itself, the pool, the restaurant, the store and the exit, on to beautiful adventures around Lake Maggiore.
Admittedly, the pool at Camping Okay Lido is very simple and also small. The pool is mostly kid-friendly with a shallow section, but so don’t expect a spectacle. A swim cap is required in this pool, but you can just pick one up at the front desk. Of course, a dip in the lake is also just a great option. That lake is about a five hundred meter walk away. For camping guests, there is a private beach with free beach chairs in the sunbathing area. In this lake, children can enjoy themselves for hours.
You can also safely call the on-site restaurant “simple. The menu is quite limited, but the pizzas they serve here are very tasty and not expensive. The restaurant is located near the pool, making it a fine combination. There are also more than enough restaurants in the nearby villages, but for a regular bite this the campground restaurant is just fine. One such village is Sesto Calende, where several restaurants, bars, stores and general amenities can be found.
Also in terms of animation, this campground can be called “simple. There is an entertainment team, but they are there only in June and August. The animation team speaks Italian and English, who teach the children a dance in the afternoon, which they then perform in the evening. Once a week a cozy evening with dancing and music is organized near the restaurant and pool. For children, by the way, there is still plenty to do. Not only at the lake, but scattered throughout the campground are several pieces of playground equipment. Because of its small scale, the campground is very orderly, so you have little to worry about your children: in fact, they are always in your line of sight.
As for sports and recreation at the campground itself, you could say that it is somewhat basic. There is a table tennis table, you can play soccer and volleyball, and there are two bocce courts. At the campground you can rent bikes to explore the area. There are several biking and hiking trails in this beautiful area, through the fields or into the mountains. And surely that is the charm of this campground: rest, relaxation, and for recreation the area has an incredible amount to offer.
Few restaurants, a basic swimming pool, hardly any animation and sports: moreover, the campground does not really have a camp store. For your breakfast, you can pick up fresh rolls at the front desk, but that’s about it. But don’t worry, two kilometers away is a large supermarket that sells everything you need.
Maybe ready for it is challenging? Exciting? Perhaps even somewhat extreme? You can do great mountain biking in this mountainous area, as well as bungee jumping, skydiving, sport climbing, hang gliding and canyoning. By the way, if you still don’t find the small pool and lake interesting enough for swimming entertainment, Waterpark Wave is four kilometers away. Water park Brebbia is also nearby, so the choice there is also great. In short, Camping Okay Lido offers a peaceful base to get to know this beautiful area better.
