In the middle of Luxembourg’s nature lies the village of Larochette, or Little Switzerland. Actually, this is the fairytale nature reserve the Müllerthal, full of waterfalls, mountains and wild nature. An area you can easily visit from the Netherlands for a weekend, to marvel and wander through something that seems hee far away to you. Camping Iris Park Birkelt is located here, making it an excellent base. This family campground attracts many Dutch people and is fully equipped. Cold? Then the roof of the pool closes and you can enjoy the sauna. Warm? Then the pool is also a fine option. Go on adventures in the area and eat at the nice restaurants nearby.
When you arrive in Larochette, you understand why they call it Little Switzerland here. The meadows, forests and rivers make this a wonderful area for hiking or biking. You will find impressive rock formations and caves here. No, this is not the Alps, but it does look suspiciously like it. The area is made even more fairytale-like by the castles you find here. For example, visit Beaufort Castle.
Hiking and biking, in other words. Mersch is a beautiful area for hiking and a close look at its unique flora and fauna. You will find the natural springs of Hunnebour and the prehistoric caves of Mamer and Saint Michael’s Tower. The Schießentümpel is Luxembourg’s highest waterfall, making it a popular attraction. You won’t be the only one taking pictures of the little bridge here, but that’s not unjustified. Also quite close is Luxembourg City, with its Grand Ducal Palace, cathedral and Neumunster Abbey.
At Camping Birkelt you will find space camping sites, which measure about 80 to 100 square meters. A total of about 540 seats are available. The campground, of course, has the luxury in it. There is a pool, you can eat well and you are in the midst of nature. A renovation of the campground is scheduled for 2021, so there seems to be some decay that year.
The campground offers several types of accommodations, including the Excellent Lounge, the Supreme Lounge and a good amount of mobile homes. These are nicely located in the woods and are fully equipped. On TV, all Dutch channels are simply offered. The place here is more than beautiful, but the accommodations here and there are somewhat close together, which may feel detrimental to the tranquility and sense of privacy. A recommendation would be to take something in the outer ring of the campground. Additionally, the chalets can feel a bit small, for the capacity they indicate. A cottage for six also feels a bit crowded. Pets are welcome in the campground, but not in every accommodation. In addition, the campground offers glamping options and mobile homes. From several places you have a view of the ruins of a castle.
Luxembourg, like the Netherlands, has all temperatures, so there is also a so-called “all-weather” pool at Camping Birkelt. And this domed pool looks futuristic. In warm weather the roof opens, in cold weather it stays closed. A snake-shaped slide provides the spectacle; for the little ones, there is also a paddling pool. Plenty to do here. By the way, the water is often very cold, which is nice in hot temperatures, but may be a bit daunting in cooler temperatures.
Restaurant Birkelt is not very highly regarded and is also only open during the high season. Throughout the year, food can be taken away here. There is also a snack bar, where Dutch specialties such as the frikandel can be ordered. For your soft drinks, coffee or beers, there is a regular bar. In the end, it is recommended to eat outside the campsite. Fine restaurants can of course still be found in the village or a little further away. Suggestions for this are La Place and Hua Ting.
At Camping Birkelt, there is a lot of indoor and quite little outdoor. So does the playgrounds. Good to know, because the indoor is not open every moment of the day. In terms of entertainment, there is plenty of entertainment and activities offered here for children, which is really quite good. There is a children’s disco, horseback riding opportunities, plenty of games and sports, playground equipment and plenty of crafts. Wi-Fi is available throughout the campground, but not all of it is strong. And take a walk on the barefoot trail, which is near the campground. Reservations are not necessary unless you really go with a large group.
One look at the map actually says a lot when it comes to sports and recreation at Camping Birkelt. An indoor bocce hall, mini golf, beach volleyball, horseback riding, the swimming pool, a game hall full of games, a skate park, a tennis court. Actually, here are plenty of opportunities for sports, whether in combination with the animation team or not. But the most important thing at this place: hiking and biking in the area. Because no doubt that’s what you’re here for anyway.
There is a supermarket on site, which has all the necessities. In the morning you will find fresh rolls and during the day there is always something to get. Of course, you can shop in the area for wider groceries. There is a full-sized supermarket in Larochette itself and a large supermarket in Mersch, fifteen minutes away.
Explore Little Switzerland by hiking and biking there. Besides that previously mentioned waterfall Schießentümpel, you could also visit places like Consdorf, Berdorf or Echternach. Slightly less touristy, but still very, very, very worthwhile. Or take a ride on the Vianden cable car. There is also an insanely beautiful castle there, perhaps the most beautiful in all of Luxembourg.
