In Schoonloo, Drenthe, about twenty kilometers from Assen, lies Recreatiepark De Tien Heugten. This area is surrounded by lots of greenery and forests, ideal for hiking and biking. The big eye-catcher of this park is the recreational lake it houses, with a sandy beach that measures some three hundred meters. There is plenty of fun to be had here for young and old alike. Rather not a natural lake? Then head to the pool, with a 36-meter-long slide and another paddling pool for toddlers. There are countless fun things to do in the area around Schoonloo: from an outing to Groningen, to Wildlands in Emmen, to biking or hiking through the many natural areas in this area. This is the Golden Triangle, the area between Emmen, Assen and Groningen. A particularly beautiful part of the Netherlands!
Are you going to De Tien Heugten for the recreation park, or for the surroundings? There is no question that the location is an absolute asset to this park. After all, the Ten Heugten is located in “the golden triangle” of Emmen, Assen and Groningen. From here there are numerous outings to make: go to the Provincial Museum in Assen, or to Camp Westerbork with its World War II horrors. To the Hunebedcentrum, or to Wildlands in Emmen. Visit the national parks Dwingeland and the Drents Friese Wold or be surprised by the museum village of Orvelte. In short, grab the stroller, bike or car and explore this rich region! By the way, the park is located directly on the famous Pieterpad, the longest hiking trail in the Netherlands. This route goes from Pieterburen to Maastricht and involves 499 kilometers, thus passing Recreatiepark De Tien Heugten.
Recreatiepark De Tien Heugten has very spacious camping pitches and all are equipped with 6 to 10 ampere electricity. You can include a connection to the water with that, as well as television. In your immediate vicinity there is always a common building with toilets, showers and dishwashing facilities, although sometimes these are somewhat outdated. To get hot water, you need a coin that costs 50 cents. The sites are all fenced with hedges, giving you a nice sense of privacy. Would you like to bring your little dog? This is allowed, although there is a maximum of two dogs. There are outlet fields. It goes without saying that you do bring your own bag to clean up your four-legged friend’s droppings.
A wide variety of accommodations can be found at Recreatiepark De Tien Heugten. The chalets and bungalows can accommodate small and larger groups, couples and entire families. All cottages are close to the lake and pool, making them really ideal to book for the whole family. So grab your gear and explore this fine area with a wonderful accommodation as a base. Please note that the cottages are not rented out for business purposes. This is also monitored.
The real attraction of Recreatiepark De Tien Heugten is the recreational pond. This lake á 9000 square meters has a maximum depth of three meters. The beach is about 300 meters long and ten meters wide. Here children can build sandcastles and swim to their heart’s content. At the campground itself you will find another outdoor pool, with a 36-meter-long slide and a paddling pool. Ideal of course for toddlers and also for slightly older children. Many swimming spots can also be found in the area; the area is almost characterized by its many lakes. So in terms of swimming fun, there is certainly plenty to do at the campground, but of course the weather has to cooperate a bit.
There is an eatery with pool table at the campground, where you can get a normal bite to eat. Various activities are also organized here, such as karaoke, music nights, bingo, cards, shuffleboard. Every week there is a party night in the restaurant; during regular evenings there is Dutch music on. At this restaurant, it is good to know that you take your time; the service does not work very fast. Nothing for you and still want to eat out outside the campsite? In the village of Borger, you can have a good meal at “De Weme.
You will find an extensive entertainment program at this campground, thanks to Kidsclub Holly. This animation is there only during the Dutch vacation periods. At Kidsclub Holly there are plenty of crafts, workshops, sports and games and a mini disco. To craft, though, you will need to bring your own craft supplies. Just before the entertainment begins, a little train rides around to pick up the children. As a parent, you can also join this little train.
Hit the 18-hole miniature golf course or let the kids play in the multiple playgrounds on all campgrounds, complete with sandbag and climbing equipment. There are also several sports and playing fields for you to use. The immediate area offers excellent hiking and biking; bicycles can be rented at the campground itself. That is also probably the absolute must-see here, because that area is beautiful.
The campground has a park shop with fresh bread service. In addition, there is a laundry service and bicycle rental. There are several large supermarkets in the area, as well as nice stores. In the campground you will be able to find only the most essentials, this park shop is not very extensive.
There are many nice things to visit in the area around Schoonloo, as already indicated. If you go to the medieval open-air museum Orvelte, don’t forget to visit Zoo Bizar. This is a mini zoo, in an old Saxon farmhouse. This zoo proudly calls itself “the smallest zoo in the Netherlands and perhaps in all of Europe. A more than fun outing to undertake even if you don’t have children. If you do want to go for the bigger stuff, then Wildlands in Emmen is obviously a very suitable option.
