Location and environment

Porto Covo is a cozy village on the west coast of Portugal. The village is located in the Alentejo region, which is known for its particularly beautiful coastline, vineyards and centuries-old cork trees. The region covers much of southern Portugal. Porto Covo is right on the coast and it is really fantastic here. The rugged cliffs, the beautiful beaches, the super-clear waters: it is a pleasure to walk and look around here. There are many beaches to visit, as well as several hidden ones. You do find yourself on the Atlantic coast and therefore the waves are evident here. This makes the area an ideal place for surfing. You will find many surf schools in the area, but it can sometimes be treacherous to swim here.

From Camping Costa do Vizir Beach Village you can be in the center of the village within 5 minutes by car, on foot it will take you about 15 minutes. Alentejo is known for its white houses with blue trim. The bright blue contrasts beautifully with the bright white, and with a clear blue sky, this is already a beautiful sight. There are several restaurants in the village where you will be served the freshest fish.

Are you looking for a fine sandy beach, blue sea but not too many waves? Then Vila Nova de Milfontes comes highly recommended. In this village you will find a wide sandy beach in a bay, so there are hardly any waves. Therefore, you can very well practice water sports here, for which you can rent the equipment on the beach. There are also many restaurants where you can eat good food.

The city of Sines is about 20 minutes north of Porto Covo and is an important port city for Portugal. This former fishing village has many good seafood restaurants and a beautiful bay with a sandy beach. The ruins of a medieval castle are visible from the beach, but the view from the castle of the bay is also beautiful. It is said that Portugal’s most important sailor, Vasco da Gama, was born in Sines. His statue stands next to the castle and a museum in the castle is dedicated to him.

Whether you are a gin lover or not, a visit to the Black Pig Gin brewery is a small celebration. With or without children. In fact, around the brewery is a large petting zoo with many animals, including black pigs. In addition, children (and adults) can ride go-karts, swing or shoot arrows. And, of course, you can sample all kinds of variations of the delicious and renowned Black Pig gin on the fine patio or at one of the other seating areas. Admission is free, by the way.

If you want to go to a safari park, Badoca Safari Park comes highly recommended. Go on a safari in a jeep and meet wildlife up close, go rafting or see one of more than 600 animals from around the world. Fun guaranteed!

Swimming

If you love swimming, then Camping Costa do Vizir Beach Village is the place to be. There is a beautiful pool here and a separate children’s pool. Around the pool are sunbeds ready to rest and enjoy the warm sun. There is also a small grassy area where you can lay down your towel. There are also lovely lounge loungers for two (or the whole family). In the summer, cushions will be included. When we were there, the pool was actually officially closed. But because of the beautiful weather, we were fortunately able to use it anyway. Only the mattresses on the lounge loungers were missing, but we did not mind. In high season, there may not be enough sun beds available. If you have mobility problems, you can walk into the water via a “walking path.

Restaurants

The campground is home to restaurant Alma Nomada. In this beautifully decorated restaurant, you can enjoy delicious food and drinks. The menu is not super extensive but has been carefully curated by chef Marco Nascimento. From the extensive wine list, you’re sure to find a wine to match your food. The restaurant is quite a bit fancier than you normally expect at a campground. Nevertheless, everyone is welcome. When we were there, in the off-season, the restaurant was open Thursday through Monday.

There is a small terrace outside the restaurant for a small snack and drink, overlooking the pool.

The restaurant also has a branch on the beach, at Praia Grande. From the terrace you have a beautiful view of the beach and the Atlantic Ocean. You will see the most beautiful sunset here! Unfortunately, this restaurant was still closed so we were not able to experience for ourselves what the food tastes like.

The surroundings are beautiful and it is definitely recommended to take a nice hiking or biking trip here. The campground also offers bicycle rentals. The famous hiking trail “Fisherman’s Trail” passes by Porto Covo and we can recommend you to walk a part of it. The entire route is 230 km long and runs from Port Covo to Lagos, all the way south. You have fantastic views of the beautiful coastline along the way.

There are several surf schools in the area if you want to (learn to) wave surf sometime. In addition, there is a diving school on site if you want to learn about the underwater world.

Details and tips

The origin of the campsite name Costa do Vizir is a tribute to a beautiful, but tragic, love story from the time of Moorish occupation. You can read the whole story at the campground on a plaque, next to the playground. Another tribute to this story is the small pond at the front of the campground with fish, frogs, dragonflies and beautiful plantings.

The website and map state that Camping Costa do Vizir Beach Village is part of Yelloh! Village, but this has not been the case recently.

This campground is great if you want to bring your dog. In fact, pets are allowed and in the area you can take the most beautiful walks with your dog.
