Camping Castell Montgri

Camping Castell Montgri

Camping Castell Montgri is located near L’Estartit, on the beautiful beaches of the Costa Brava. This terraced campground is grand and is located directly against the beautiful mountain Rocamaura, which offers stunning views every day.

Camping Castell Montgri is a 4-star campsite and is great for families of all ages. However, the proportion of (pre)teenagers is very high, which is why we definitely recommend this campground for this age group. There is plenty to do at the campground and a separate entertainment program for this group. There is also a disco on site (open until 4 a.m.), so your kids won’t have to go to the village to go out. But this is also a very nice campsite for younger children. Because with three pools, slides, an incredibly extensive entertainment program and a large mini-golf course, you don’t need much more for a really fun vacation.

Location and environment

Because Camping Castell Montgri is located at the foot of Mount Rocamaura, the entire campsite offers a beautiful view of the rocky outcrops of this mountain. The higher you get on the campsite, the more spectacular the views become of the beautiful Spanish countryside and even the Mediterranean Sea. The famous village of L’Estartit is about 1.5 kilometers from the campsite.
You can easily get here on foot, but there is also a free shuttle bus from the campsite during the day that will take you to the center of the village, or back to the campsite. With the hot Spanish summers, this is definitely recommended. The bus stop is at the front of the campground, behind the reception.

Nearby is the Castle of Montgri, this castle can be seen from some areas of the campsite. You can walk to it, which is definitely recommended. It is a tough hike with a significant climb, though.

The area around Camping Castell Montgri is great for beautiful cycling and hiking tours. Upon arrival, you will be given a flyer with a variety of different hiking, biking and running routes that start from the campground and take you to different places around the campground. Please note that due to the drought/heat, the nature park was closed when we were there and the walks in the nature reserve were not possible.

Furthermore, L’Estartit is within walking distance, with a lovely sandy beach and many nice stores and restaurants. The main harbor is also fun to walk through.

A boat tour of the Medes Islands is also highly recommended. The Medes Islands are located about 1.5km off the coast of L’Estartit and consists of seven rocky islets that can be visited with a boat trip. They form one of the most important marine flora and fauna reserves in the Western Mediterranean. This makes it one of the most beautiful places in the Mediterranean for diving or snorkeling. There are different providers and different types of tours. The crisp blue water is beautiful to see and during the boat trips you often have a moment where you can have a nice swim. Don’t forget to bring your snorkel kit!

The towns of Girona, Pals, La Bisbal and Besalú are also well worth seeing. In Figueres is the museum of world-famous artist Salvador Dalí.

Of course, a visit to the metropolis of Barcelona is also possible from this campsite. Several excursions are offered, but you can also go there yourself by car or train. The distance is 140 km. If you go by car, note that you need a special environmental sticker in Barcelona. You can find more information on the ANWB website.

Pitches

Although Castell Montgri is a real terraced campsite, with a lot of difference in altitude, this does not apply to the pitches. These are almost all located at the beginning of the campground so it is not difficult to unload your car or park your caravan or camper. There are three different types of pitches, we will specify them below:

Comodity Plus: these are the largest pitches of 120m2 and suitable for up to 8 people. There is a private water point and 10A of electricity. The sites have natural shade and are close to the Ombra pool and supermarket. On the Map, the spots are highlighted in pink.

Comodity: with a size of 90m2, you have a nice spacious place where you can stay with up to 6 people. These sites also have natural shade and are close to the Ombra pool and supermarket. You have your own water point and 10A electricity. On the Map, the spots are marked in red.

Standard: these pitches are the smallest pitches at this campground and are 72m2 in size. You can stay here with up to 6 people and you have 6A of electricity. The Standard pitches are near the Panorama pool in the center of the campground. These spots do not have shade everywhere. On the Map, the spots are marked in purple. In addition, some standard spots can be found in the yellow and orange zones.

The camping sites are separated by a low fence with plantings growing against it and all form fairly straight streets. In most places you have quite a lot of shade, but there is quite a bit of difference here. They are originally all grassy patches, but it is quite dry so there is no longer grass everywhere.

There are several, large, sanitary buildings in the campground which are half covered. Therefore, it is very light there. The plumbing is fine, but fairly standard. However, cleaning does take place throughout the day. The showers are quite small, but they do have a bench, hanging hooks and a shelf. The faucets are push buttons, so you will have to frequently interrupt your wash by turning on the water. We did feel a few times that there were some problems with hot water: sometimes it took quite a long time for the water to get hot and sometimes it didn’t happen at all. But this could vary from shower to shower.

There were more than enough dishwashing areas, which were also kept clean. There are also a few dishwashers that you can use for a fee. So should you not feel like washing dishes, that is also an option.

Public washing machines are available at Camping Castell Montgri, but you can also have your laundry done for a fee. So no queues here to claim a washing machine, just drop off your laundry and pick it up clean at an agreed time. What a luxury!

Comfort between the ages of 5 and 10.
Premium mobile homes are less than 5 years old.

Lifestyle Holidays

Lifestyle Holidays is a UK-based provider, but its accommodations can also be booked through Dutch sites. They have a large selection of mobile homes at Camping Castell Montgri and also a lot of choice in different types and variants. We have thus sorted for your convenience by area (m²), so that depending on your party you can easily select the right mobile home.

Amber 2: A 24m² mobile home for 4 people with 2 bedrooms (1x double bed, 2x single bed)
Ruby 2: A 24m² mobile home for 6 people with 2 bedrooms (1x double bed, 2x single bed) and a sofa bed in the living room.
Chalet 5: A 32m² mobile home for 5 people with 2 bedrooms (1x double bed, 2x single bed) and a sofa bed in the living room.
Sapphire: A 32m² mobile home for 6 people with 2 bedrooms (1x double bed, 2x single bed) and a sofa bed in the living room.
Ruby 3: A 32m² mobile home for 8 people with 3 bedrooms (1x double bed, 4x single bed) and a sofa bed in the living room.
Family 8: A mobile home 34m² for 8 people with 3 bedrooms (1x double bed, 4x single bed) and a sofa bed in the living room. Because the area of this mobile home is smaller than the Emerald and Apollo, the bedrooms are also somewhat smaller.
Apollo 6: A 40m² mobile home for 6 people with 3 bedrooms (1x double bed, 4x single bed)
Apollo 8: A 40m² mobile home for 8 people with 3 bedrooms (1x double bed, 4x single bed) and a sofa bed in the living room.
The Apollo 8 features (compared to the Apollo 6) a sofa bed in the living room for 2 people. In addition, the Apollo 8 also has a shower in both bathrooms. The Apollo 6 only has a shower in 1 bathroom, the other bathroom has only a toilet and sink. So the Apollo 8 is the same size as the Apollo 6, but with sofa bed and extra shower, it is better suited for a larger party.
Emerald: A 40m² mobile home for 8 people with 3 bedrooms (1x double bed, 4x single bed) and a sofa bed in the living room.
The Emerald is similar in area to the Apollo. The difference is that the Emerald has only 1 bathroom and the Apollo has 2 bathrooms. This leaves you with more space in the living room in the Emerald, but so you all have to use 1 bathroom.
Platinum: A 44m² mobile home for 8 people with 3 bedrooms (1x double bed, 4x single bed) and a sofa bed in the living room. This is Lifestyle Holidays’ largest mobile home and features 2 bathrooms with toilet, shower and sink.

Lifestyle Holidays accommodations can be booked at: AllCamps / Lux-Camp / Suncamp

Vacanceselect

In addition to 3 different types of mobile homes, Vacanceselect also has a number of safari tents at Castell Montgri.

Safari tent‘Nature Lodge Plus‘ has 2 bedrooms (1x double bed, 2x single bed) and has a bathroom with shower, sink and toilet.
Mobile home‘Cosy‘ is the cheapest mobile home at Vacanceselect and comes in different variants. They all have 1 bathroom, but are available with 2 or 3 bedrooms, some of which have bunk beds. So please pay close attention to whether the type/number of beds is suitable for your party.

Mobile home“Privilege” is 34m² and the most luxurious of Vacanceselect’s at Castell Montgri and therefore the most expensive. The mobile homes are modernly furnished and compared to the “Moda” have 2 bathrooms with shower.

Vacanceselect accommodations can be booked with: Vacanceselect / AllCamps / Suncamp

Swimming

Camping Castell Montgri has no less than three different swimming pools! Each of the pools has its own benefit. At pool Ombra at the bottom of the campground you will find the slides and a nice children’s pool. This pool is not very big, but it has a nice sunbathing area. There are also several restaurants, a creperie and a take-away right next to the pool. The supermarket is also around the corner.

Swimming pool Panorama is the largest pool in the campground and is not named panorama for nothing: you have a wonderful view of the surroundings! You can enjoy playing in the water, even for younger children because of the large difference in depths. There is a nice little slide and this pool also has a diving board. In a large part of the pool, the water is only 1.10 m deep, which is ideal for young children. There is also a separate, small, children’s pool. There is no playground equipment or slides for the little ones. Just outside the pool area is a large sunbathing area where you can lay down your towel or chair. Around the pool it is tiled and here you can also lay down your towel, but it is not very nice. If you prefer a lounger, you can but you have to pay for it. There is also a large terrace where you can sit at a table.

There are sunbeds at both pools, but you have to rent them. The cost is 4 euros per day (2022 season). While this is a minus point, it means that there is no “towel laying. Next to both pools are sunbathing areas where you can lay down your towel. Or bring your own chair.

What is very special is that both pools are open until midnight! So you can also take a refreshing dip under the stars late at night.

Pool La Bassa is beautifully situated in the middle of the natural park. This does make it secluded from the rest of the campground. It has a beautiful view because you are higher up the mountain. It is a small pool, but very nicely landscaped and also a bit quieter than the other pools. There is a waterfall in the pool which is a perfect outlet for taking a bomb or jumping into the water. It does have a large bar and while you enjoy a delicious cocktail you will enjoy a fantastic view! Please note that it is quite a climb as it is at the very top of the campground and in addition, you have to climb quite a few stairs to get to the pool. From the bottom of the campground, it is at least a 15-minute walk.

Multiple lifeguards are present everywhere, providing keen supervision. Therefore, it is forbidden to have inflatable attributes in the pool and throwing balls is also prohibited. Furthermore, you may just enter the water with your swimming shorts and a swim cap is not required either. The water is heated which is nice in itself, but at the end of the day it feels lukewarm and therefore a little less fresh.

If you prefer to go to the beach, you can go to the beautiful sandy beach of L’Estartit. The free shuttle bus gets you to the beach within 10 minutes and you can enjoy the waves, the rafts in the water that you can jump from or just enjoy the sun.

Restaurants

You won’t get hungry at Camping Castell Montgri! There are so many places where you can eat out, get a snack, have a cold ice cream or a cup of coffee.

There is at least one (grill) restaurant at all pools. There is also a pizzeria and a paella restaurant. You can also order your food from several places and take it back to your accommodation. But there are also plenty of tables and chairs available to eat your take-out food on the spot. Or take it and eat it at the outdoor cinema, or during the mini disco or one of the evening shows.

For the sweet-toothed among us, there is also plenty on offer. There is a creperie at the Ombra pool, where you can also order fresh waffles. Near the Panorama pool is a separate ice cream parlor where you can buy delicious frozen yogurts, with unlimited toppings. Here you can also order a fresh crepe.

During our visit in summer 2022, only 2 restaurants were open due to staff shortages.

500 meters from the campground you will find restaurant Swift. It is not part of the campground, but they do work closely together. Here you can eat burgers, tapas, pizza and salads. Right next door you will find JOCS, a fun park with carnival rides where your kids will have a great time!

Animation

There is an incredibly extensive entertainment program at Castell Montgri. Activities and games are organized throughout the day, spread throughout the campground. Every evening the mini disco takes place on the large terrace by the Panorama pool. There are also special activities for teenagers, and in the evening there is a “teens club” in the underground disco. Even later in the evening, the feet go off the floor here as well: from midnight to 4 a.m. you can go out in the disco. Great for parents, because your child doesn’t necessarily have to go to the village to go out. And you don’t have to worry about noise pollution because the disco is soundproofed.

Also, 4 movies are shown every day in the outdoor cinema. Think documentaries, themed films and children’s films. In the evening, a well-known blockbuster is often shown. It also shows (important) sporting events. The cinema can be found next to the Ombra pool.

The campground even has a small petting zoo with goats, chickens, geese and bucks. They also keep a vegetable garden there and the animation team has a separate play area for your child to visit.

There are also several playgrounds and an indoor playground where your child can have fun in the ball pit, play games or draw on a chalk wall.

What makes this campground unique is the great selection of evening entertainment. A big evening show is organized every day at the Panorama pool. Think Karaoke and a magic/acrobat show. During our visit there was a performance by a Michael Jackson Tribute Band: this was a fantastic show! There are several bars where you can get a drink and enjoy the show on the large terrace.

Sports & Recreation

Many sports activities are organized by the animation team. Soccer, basketball, aqua gym, water polo, tennis, you name it and it is organized.

In addition, you can also play a game of soccer yourself, there is a basketball court and tennis court, as well as ping pong in several places. There is even its own (large) mini-golf course where you can show off your golf skills for a small fee. There is also a separate bocce court and a place for archery (this is also organized by the animation team). In the sports garden you can train yourself and also have a beautiful view.

Teens can even go out at this campground: there is a real disco. Considering the number of teens at this campground, they will have a great time here!

In several places you can play a game of pool. And there is a separate game room available that includes pinball machines, air field hockey and various types of grappling machines.

Furthermore, from the campsite you can take beautiful walks in the natural park, which you can access directly from the campsite. The campground offers several hiking trails as well as biking and running trails.

Or walk into the excursion desk available at the campground for all sorts of other activities you can do off-site.

Stores

There is a supermarket in the campground, where you can also go for delicious fresh bread and an assortment of croissants and sweet rolls. Despite being a large store, we did not find the assortment huge. But you can certainly do your shopping for a (simple) meal there. What we did notice was that there are a lot of Dutch products for sale, such as sprinkles, gingerbread, mayonnaise, crackers, etc.

You could buy bread at several places in the campground, but we didn’t see that. At the bakery in the Panorama restaurant, the bread was always out, or not available. Possibly they do have offerings in the morning.

If you want a little more choice, just 500 meters (walking) away there is a large Lidl where you can buy all your groceries. L’Estartit, of course, also has a number of supermarkets.
