Before you arrive at your vacation destination, you often have to spend a long time in the car. With children in the back seat, sometimes it takes even longer than you’d like. But with a few fun games you can do together in the car, the drive will go faster than you think. Below are the top 5 car games according to Camping Expert:
1) Badge bingo
This is and always has been a very fun game! You can prepare it in advance, but with a blank sheet of paper and a pen, you can also make it on the spot. Before leaving, print out a few sheets of 25 numbers with double digits up to 100, for the numbers 1 to 9 you put a zero in front of them. You make five rows of 5 numbers each time, interchangeably (from 00 to 100). If you don’t have anything printed, grab a blank sheet and write it down. In the car, give the leaves to the children, along with a pen. The idea is for the children to look for the numbers on the license plates of cars you encounter. Once you find a number, cross it out. Beforehand you agree on what you are playing for, for example, one row horizontally. Whoever fills a row first shouts “BINGO” very loudly! You can continue until the sheet is full. Fun guaranteed!
2) Who (or what) am I?!
Another easy game is “Who (or what) am I?!”. One player thinks of a person or object and the other players must guess who or what it is. You may ask up to 20 questions. Note: Don’t make it too difficult for children. The person who guesses it may make up the next word or object.
3) I see, I see what you don’t see….
A golden oldie, but still a fun game on the go. A player chooses an object inside or outside the car and says “I see, I see what you don’t see and the color is…”. The other players may take turns guessing what they think it is. The one who wins gets to choose the next item.
4) Make Word Snake
This is a fun AND educational game. You choose a category in advance, such as animals, countries or food. With animals, for example, you start with cat, then the next one has to think of an animal with the last letter, in this case the T, for example tiger. That player continues with the letter R.
5) Find the banana
In this game, the parents will join in as enthusiastically as the children! Every time you see a yellow vehicle driving, shout “BANAAN.” For a yellow car or truck, you get 1 point. If you see a yellow car or truck with a trailer, you get 2 points. You can play the game throughout the journey. Don’t be alarmed if you suddenly hear “BANAAN” from the back seat again!
Extra: games during rest breaks
Don’t forget to exercise during rest breaks, too. Try to avoid jumping straight into the car after refueling and going to the restroom to continue driving. Bring something from home that the children can have fun with, such as a soccer ball, bubble wrap, sidewalk chalk or a jump rope. Or come up with a game where they can run for a while: who is the fastest at…. Often there is also a playground at the gas station/roadhouse where children can play for a while.
