On the green floodplains of the river IJssel, near the beautiful city of Deventer, lies Camping De Scherpenhof, recreation park and marina. From here, you can take a beautiful trip down the river, or enjoy the little beach that lies next to it. Or throw out your rod and hook a catfish or an eel. Will you choose a river view during your stay? Or would you rather retreat to the woods? This family campground has plenty of entertainment and especially the children will not easily get bored here. After all, an indoor pool, an outdoor pool and an indoor playground await them. The campground is undergoing major modernization in 2021 and 2022, which may cause some inconvenience.
Camping De Scherpenhof is located just above Deventer. This city has a beautiful historic downtown and is definitely worth a visit. Apeldoorn is also nearby, with its Paleis ‘t Loo. Located on the border of Overijssel and Gelderland, there are numerous trips to take from here. Think of the Apenheul, the Hoge Veluwe, amusement park Julianatoren and family park ‘t Smallert. Or drive a bit north to Zwolle or to Kampen. This is the IJssel Valley, with its Hanseatic cities. Whether you take a trip on the IJssel River, take a bike in these green surroundings or take the car towards these cities: this is simply a beautiful part of the Netherlands where there is plenty to discover.
Do you like to stand right by the water, or do you prefer the shady woods? All pitches at Camping De Scherpenhof measure one hundred square meters and are equipped with electricity. Here and there are central water points. There are a number of camping fields: the IJsselweide is right on the water, as is the Fish Island. The name says it all; there is excellent fishing here. But you may not feel completely safe right by the water, for example, if you have small children. Then head to the much more wooded campground Campground 2. There are plenty of bathroom facilities, though it is wise to bring your own toilet paper and soap. Dogs are welcome at this campground.
Camping De Scherpenhof is located in the town of Terwolde and directly on the river IJssel. Here you will find very comfortable mobile homes, bungalows and chalets. Accommodations also come with a choice between a spot right on the water, or if you prefer deeper into the woods. Besides The Scherpenhof itself, there are several more providers of the spots, making the choice great. It is a matter of orienting among the various providers to find the ideal spot. The cottages can accommodate small and large groups, but they are strict about corporate outings here: they are not allowed. This is also monitored.
This campground is largely made up of water, so in terms of swimming facilities, you won’t be short of things to do here. The indoor pool is heated; the outdoor pool is large. Of course, the little ones are also taken into account here, who can splash around in the paddling pool. At the recreational lake that is also at e campsite, there is a sunbathing area and a beach. Here you will find a huge diversity of fish, such as catfish, eel, pike, bars, pikeperch, barbel, predatory bleak, furrows, brazem and carp. To fish, you do need a fishing license. These are easily available online. By appointment, you can also relax here in the sauna, which features a steam room, plunge pool and rain shower.
The campground offers plenty of choices for a quick bite to eat. Restaurant De Steenhoven offers an a la carte menu. Central, of course, is the atmospheric, authentic stone oven. When the weather is nice, you have a beautiful view from the terrace on the river. Cafe The Saloon is a cafe as you would expect. With a pool table and a dart board. Brown café The Bogenzaal can be rented out for a party. There is room here for about 250 people, but we were talking about food. There is also a snack bar in the campground, for fries, burgers and all kinds of snacks.
At Camping De Scherpenhof, there really is an enormous amount to do. Kidsclub Holly organizes the entertainment program, with craft mornings, game afternoons and scavenger hunts. The team operates only during school vacations. Then you have a huge playground at the indoor play paradise Play City. This multi-level paradise is home to slides, a ball pool, monkey bridges, toboggans, ball cannons and a soft play area for the little ones. For slightly older children, the Chillzone is a fun place. Here they have their own Wifi, a playstation, pool table and TV. For the whole family, the bowling alley is a fun option. These four courses are near the restaurant, making it a nice combination. For children up to and including 12 years old, a little train rides around in the early evening. On one of the playgrounds is another huge air trampoline.
You could say that the already mentioned Play City definitely belongs here as well, as does the bowling alley. There are also two tennis courts in the campground. Tennis rackets and balls are available for rent at the front desk. The campground is right on the river IJssel, so you can also opt for plenty of water fun. Get out on the water, cruise around and discover Gelderland and Overijssel from here.
For your daily shopping, there is a so-called “convenience store” at the campground, with fresh rolls, drinks and souvenirs. This store is located near the bowling alley. In addition, there is a laundry service. Want some bigger groceries? Just under five minutes away is a branch of Coop, in Terwolde itself.
A visit to Deventer is really a must. This city is right on the river IJssel, so you can just take a boat here. However, docking is not possible directly in the center, but the walking distance from the port is not too bad. This lively, old city is definitely recommended. Go there for an afternoon, with a nice dinner to finish.
